Cancer neuro-environment
Prof. Erin was graduated from Medical School in Marmara University in 1995. She continued her studies in Penn State University Hershey PA and received her doctorate degree in June 2001 in Pharmacology. She studied interactions between Bcl-2 and calcineurin as part of her Ph.D thesis under guidance of Dr. Melvin Billingsley. She worked as a post-doctoral fellow in Gittlen Cancer Center in Hershey for three years where she started her studied on metastatic breast carcinoma and sensory neurons. She moved to Akdeniz University in 2004 as a faculty member and since then she has been working on neuronal pathways in cancer metastasis. Her work yielded several important proteases that may regulate immune response to cancer such as ADAM10 and BMP-1.
Webinar Summary: Interactions between the immune system and the nervous system are crucial in maintaining homeostasis. Various mediators including proteases are involved in these interactions and disturbances of these neuro-immune interactions may participate in carcinogenesis and metastasis. Studies documented the presence of nerve endings within solid tumors in humans and experimental animals. Involvement of the efferent sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation in carcinogenesis has been extensively investigated. On the other hand the role of the afferent sensory neurons and the neuropeptides in tumor development, growth, and progression is recently appreciated and the focus of the talk will be these interactions.
